I have antique brown furniture in my bedroom and I want to re-decorate and make it a beach cottage theme?

I can change everything else, the head board the wall paint and decor but the furniture I cant change, the furniture is….. a make up table, a high boy cabinet with drawers, a wide dresser, another taller skinnier dresser, a desk that folds down to a desk and two end tables next to the bed. Any suggestions?

Now pick an interior bedroom scene with dark wood furniture. Write in the color Rainwashed and copy it onto the walls. The trim should be bright white as should the ceiling. Those are the perfect beach cottage colors. I’ve done several beach or cottage themed rooms with these colors and clients are in love with the room when they see it.
I agree with the indoor shutters on the windows or for a more polished look, white flowing sheers. Depending on your age, if you’re a young person for a bedspread, something like this would be a choice of mine: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=118756&RN=31
If older, something more like: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=123300&RN=31
One or two nicely framed pictures, a smart trick is to go to art.com and get posters and then buy inexpensive white or dark wood frames from a local craft store. Maybe a nice big shell set on a dresser or night stand. Not much more than that, you want to have the affect of uncluttered and breezy.

Maybe you could paint your furniture white or refinish it in a weathered stain. Go with pastels like aqua-peach etc colors. Add some sea shells and things like that for decorations.

Beachy furniture is usually distressed. Paint it white or pale pastel and add a crackel finish or just sand down the paint to make it look old and used.

I wouldn’t touch the furniture, but I’d change everything else.

Pale blue with an offwhite ceiling is a great color combination for a cottage theme. You could also do an off white on the walls.

Because you have dark brown furniture, you need to lighten up in other ways. A light blue duvet set with cream accents or an all white set will make your bed seem lighter.

On your windows, have sheer curtains as opposed to heavy drapes. You could also do wooden shutters, which will really add a cottage feel. If you can change your headboard, you can make one out of old shutters as well. Find a home store that sells shutters or an antique store to create a custom headboard.

If your rug conflicts with your theme or you have hardwood floor, add an area rug with colors that give you a cottage feel. Blue and silver would look great on the floor, and choosing a rug like this http://houseofarearugs.com/Nolita-1312-Silver-Blue-p-482.html will warm up your room and detract from the dark wood.

Other small touches: Vases with sand and seashells or solid white picture frames with tiny shells glued to the edges. Cottage rooms are very basic, so don’t overdo the accessories.

Sounds like fun!! Focus on a light and airy color for your walls. Maybe some bamboo shades and white, breezy curtains? Bring the beachy feeling in using accesories like candles, shells, photos, etc. Also, some potted palms would look great!

    I just did something similar:

    Hi,

there’s a lot of furniture. You can’t actually ignore that if you want to change your room’s theme. A good solution would be to paint your furniture. Go for warm and light colors and add accessories on the way. It could work.
