What would be a good family friendly beach vacation?

We are a family of 4 with a 5 year old and a 1 year old we are looking for a family friendly getaway this summer at the beach. We have been looking at St. Pete, The Bahamas, The Keys and a little closer to home around Destin FL. We are looking for something straight outta the movies with great views and fun things to explore with the kids…any suggestions?

Delray Beach, Florida in Palm Beach County is one of the top-rated family beaches in Florida.

You can see lots of photos and read about it here…

I’m not sure what a 1 year old would like to do but for the 5 year old, you might like to look at this sandcastle building page and get some of the free downloads for some beach fun and a tool kit list to make your own sandcastle building supply kit with items right out of your own kitchen — for free! ;)

Jekyll Island, Georgia is where my family has been going for nigh onto 30 years.

It’s kid friendly and laid-back, with 10 miles of mostly uncrowded beach fronting the Atlantic. A great venue if you’re looking for a vacation on a budget.

For kids, they have Summer Waves Water Park (with stations suitable for a 5 and 1 year old, with adult supervision); the Georgia Sea Turtle Center; mini-golf; 20 miles of bike trail (and places to rent tow-trailers for the kids, helmets, or kid bike seats).

Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island’s north shore is a great place for kids to explore among the driftwood trees.

For something straight out of the movies, try the Jekyll Island Historic District. Lots of refurbished historic buildings, including the Jekyll Island Club Hotel and the Crane Cottage. It also has some good restaurants and shops for adults and kids alike. They’ve actually filmed movies at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel and elsewhere on the island ("The Legend of Bagger Vance"; "Glory"; and the movie "Jekyll Island", which was a heist film).

They just opened a new Hampton Inn on the island, or stay at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. And since by law only 35 percent of the island can be developed, you see plenty of wildlife, from deer to raccoons to squirrels to what my son used to call "Mars" rabbits (marsh rabbits).

Hope you have a great vacation wherever you decide to visit!
