I am redecorating my room with a beach/ocean theme, but I’m 21 and I want it to be sophisticated, any ideas?

I am trying to steer away from seashells and waves and fish decorations, but I love the idea of a calming, ocean-themed bedroom. Do you have suggestions for how I could do this without being juvenile?

Create an accent wall behind your headboard with a tropical mural.

use soft colors like blues and whites to represent the sky/ ocean
and you can use tans/ browns/ greens for colors to remind you of sands/ plants you find nearby.

don’t get too cheesy and use ocean like borders with sea shells and waves to go around your room or it’ll look childish.

you can fill up a nice big glass jar with sea shells /starfish / or put up some pictures of the beach on end tables.

you can buy textured paint (sandstone) that looks exactly like sand. I have this in my bedroom and i love it. It’s not ocean themed but it surely reminds me of the beach.

ok paint the walls a patel blue with white accente (furniture, shelving ect) get a white adorandack chair (which could be a plastic 5$ one at rite aid) and throw a blanket over it. It llooks relaxing and like an island get away chair Get a bamboo rug for the room (trust me) lol.
You dont have to avoid seashells actually. if you like them. You can buy the lightly colored or uncolored ones and put them on shelves under the chair ect. and sanddollars.
and be sure to pick a fitting beadspread to pull the look together. fishnett is also a nice accent, but use it in moderation, otherwise itll look tacky! ^_^
    have fun!!

go key west beach home. big pieces of white fruniture (it does NOT have to be wicker), this includes white plantation shutters. use white soft fabrics like chifon for any drapes or in place of closet doors. then stick to a green or blue color scheme. seafoam green is sooo pretty on a wall, where the baby blues can look a little too baby if it isnt the right shade. top your bed off with a comforter with a white background and a green blue print http://cheapdiva.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/03/27/pottery_barn_overlapping_leaves_org.jpg add a big fan with a soft light, http://common.csnstores.com/common/categories/large/15142.jpg make it feel like you could be at a beach bed and breakfest, not like your on the beach all the time, no one likes sand in a room

paint your walls a stippled aqua colour and go with beige and aqua

make some painted cornice boards from wood in for your windows in aqua or beige, a throw rug in beige and aqua, a print of sandollars a vase with some neutral reeds , tall on the floor… you can buy a glass lamp that you can fill with sea side things or similar echoing oceanic artifact

I think I know what you’re looking for. I did the same in my room and I love it, very relaxing, calming, soothing. I painted the walls with a Sherman Williams paint called Rainwashed. It is truly the most soothing color I have ever seen. The wood work I did in a gloss white. Dressers, nightstands also white. I have a wrought iron bed in a washed blue color so that fit in perfectly. I had a book shelf built on one entire side wall of the room with the window in the center. An overstuffed reading chair (with a white slip cover) by the bookshelf facing the window. While I don’t have an ocean outside, I have a river to look at. I kept the floors hard wood with sea grass runners on each side of the bed. I have hurricane candles in wrought iron candle holders and I do have a collection of shells, but not just any shell, these are big shells that have been collected from beaches all around the world, so they are not just shells but memories. A few well chosen and placed pieces of ocean scenery by the artist Andrew Borsari are hung. The nice thing about that is that he’s a photographer and has photographed some of my husband and my favorite spots so it’s nice to see them when we can’t get away. He has a website if you want to check out his work.

Just use white furniture and soft bedding. Even seashells would look wonderful in a nice fish bowl on your dresser with some white vases close to each other. Good luck! :)
